The Ultimate Guide to Straightening Your Hair Without Heat Damage

For most of us, straightening our hair is part of our styling routine because it tames that unruly mess and gives us that sleek look we love. However, let’s get one thing straight – straightening hair too much can lead to damage.

Want to know how to straighten your hair without damaging it? Here’s what you need to know:

Can I use a straightener on wet hair?

We definitely don’t recommend it because it can fry your cuticles and strip moisture off the strands. Straightening wet hair can also increase split ends and breakage, which is not what you want for your hair! So, even if you are in a rush, it’s best to allow your hair to dry before straightening it.

How often can I straighten my hair without damaging it?

Now, this is a question we get asked often. And the answer to this question depends on different factors like how hot your straightener is and your hair type. However, if you are guilty of over-washing your hair and straightening it, it might be a good idea to give it a break. Instead, try using a dry shampoo to freshen your hair, straighten small sections, and sleep with your hair in a scarf to make your straightened hair lasts longer.

What is the ideal temperature for straightening hair?

Determining an ‘ideal’ temperature for straightening your hair is a bit tricky as it depends on factors including your hair type and volume. Nonetheless, research suggests that the ideal temperature range is between 250 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 120 to 190 degrees Celsius). So, if you have fine hair, it’s best to stick to lower temperatures, and if you have thicker or coarse hair, you may opt for higher temperatures within this range.

How to protect my hair from heat?

We understand that you may not want to stop straightening your hair altogether. But we can’t stress enough on the importance of taking precautions to prevent long-term damage. That’s why using a heat protectant is very important. It will act as a barrier between your hair and the heat, protecting the hair fibres exposed to heat while also hydrating your strands. Just think of it like sunscreen for your hair.
