Hair Care Myths To Avoid At All Costs

There are many myths and misconceptions about hair care that have been passed down through the years. While some of these myths may seem logical, they can actually be quite harmful to your hair. Here are some common hair care myths debunked to help you make informed decisions about how to care for your hair at home:

Myth: You should wash your hair every day.

Fact: Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils and lead to dry, brittle hair. It is generally recommended to wash your hair every two to three days as this works for most hair types. But if you’re unsure, we can give you our advice when you come in for your consultation based on your hair type and scalp condition.

Myth: Trimming your hair regularly makes it grow faster.

Fact: This one’s a bit tricky! Hair grows from the root, so trimming the ends of your hair will not affect its rate of growth. Trimming your hair can, however, help to remove split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and well-maintained. Healthy hair that is well-taken care of usually grows at a better rate.

Myth: Brush your hair 100 times a day to make it shiny & healthy.

Fact: Brushing your hair too frequently or too vigorously can damage the hair shaft and lead to split ends. It is generally recommended to brush your hair gently and only as needed to style or detangle it. We also recommend using a wide-toothed comb for when you brush as it is easier on the hair.

Myth: Using hot water to wash your hair will make it shinier.

Fact: Hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils and lead to dry, brittle hair. It also dries your scalp, leading to itchiness and dandruff.  The overall texture of your hair takes a blow when water is too hot (much like when heating tools are used in excess). We generally recommend using lukewarm/cold water to wash your hair.

Myth: Using conditioner on your scalp will make it more healthy.

Fact: Applying conditioner to your scalp can lead to build-up and this is what makes your hair appear greasy. The nourishment that conditioner provides is designed to help the length of your hair and not your scalp so make sure to be careful the next time you apply this product!

Myth: Coloring your hair damages it irreparably.

Fact: Coloring your hair can damage it if it is done improperly or if harsh chemicals are used. However, with professional care and following up with the use of nourishing products, it is possible to color your hair while maintaining a healthy sheen. There are also treatments you can opt for after colouring your hair to make sure it has the nourishment it needs, we offer these treatments here at Grace Gold!

There are many myths about hair care that can be harmful or simply not true.
